I walked through the front doors to see that the library was packed, and went into the backroom to find a 200 pound dog and some clowns running around. Now that room is for employees only... So I was pretty concerned. I proceeded to the main room to find that there were hundreds of people packed into the library, and that it was the library's 8th anniversary. Somehow I was the only person in Greece that had no idea this was taking place, and I worked there. The event included Free donuts, cider, and soup. There was a live band, crafts for the kids, promotional goods, mini-golf, entertainers, the 200 pound dog, and even those guys that draw an animated version of your face. You know, the ones that cost like 10 dollars at amusement parks? Those guys. All of this was packed in front of, behind and in shelves. The quite study room had been reduced to a cavern full of echoes from the raucous in the main room. I therefore pity anyone who actually wanted to study. This was all put on hold for speeches from various important local officials, including Joe Robach and John Auberger. As you can imagine, books were returned in massive proportions that day. It was my job to clear the book drops, and sort the books on appropriate carts to be shelved. I broke a sweat that day. It was a wierd day.

Havin' Fun Isn't Hard

Some people come to the library every day - at the exact same time, sit in the exact same place, and leave at the exact same time, and some of them stay for eight or more hours at a time. Some of them bring their own computers in to take advantage of the free internet, and some of them use the library computers. The only problem is, the computers have a one hour per account, per day limit. So some people like to wait around until someone leaves their computer without signing out and then they go to that computer and use the rest of previous users' time. The library is a great place to be, and it is a comfortable study environment. You can read, learn, socialize, or even play a quite game of chess with a friend. I just don't understand how people can tolerate spending that much time in the same place.

Speaking of sitting in the same place for so long, did you know that the amount of time that the average American spends in front of the TV is like, 6 hours per day? Yesterday I was standing on the other side of the drive-up bookdrop to empty the bin. Just as I emptied it out and put it back, literally forty full-length movies came pouring in about eight at a time. I even counted. I like movies too, but forty is a bit excessive. If you figure forty dvds with a one-week rental period, and the movies average about two hours each, that's outrageous. You do the math.

Hint: (40dvd)(2hrs) = No Life

Not all TV is bad though, there are plenty of educational shows that encourage children to spend their time learning. The library is a great place for that, a place where you can check out books about nearly anything. Don't take my word for it, just watch this clip from one of the shows I loved dearly as a child. (Only the 1st song applies, this is the only video of this song I could find)

Inspirational.

Pilot

Congratulations you are reading the first ever entry of my blog, The Book-Keeper! My name is Dave, and from here on, I will share with you some of the exiting aspects of being a book-keeper.

First off, I got my driver's license today. That was exciting. I did very well after failing the first time. I took the test at Churchville this time. The guy in the car seemed much nicer than the old, mean lady from Emerson and Glide. I took a victory drive after I dropped my mom off at home. It was fantastic.

At work my official job title is called "Page." I prefer book-keeper, because it's better. My job is primarily to make sure that returned books make it back to their proper place on the shelves at the Greece Public Library. Recently, the library has become more rowdy and messy than normal, and more and more books and movies are being charged because they are not returned in good condition. Recently a copy of "Bee Movie" was returned completely drenched in honey. Also some items were very smelly, and the bite marks made us absolutely certain that they were all urinated upon by a dog or cat. Vandalism levels have also been high lately. Yesterday a pumpkin set out as a decoration was smashed on the new carpet in the childrens room. Today another pumpkin was found impaled by something, and apparently a rock was thrown at a painting. We never know who does this stuff, it just happens. They call Greece ghetto for a reason i guess. They recently put a keypad lock on the door that leads into the backroom. This is very annoying because I go through that door a lot, but knowing the code makes me feel important, so I suppose it evens out.

I hope you enjoyed the first day of "The Book-Keeper." Feel free to comment this blog and check for updates in the future. I am confident that it could change your life forever.
